The best natural beaches in Almería that you didn’t expect

Tiempo de lectura: 3 minutos y medio

Much is said about the beaches of Cabo de Gata in Almería, but we are going to introduce you to other natural beaches in Almería that will surprise you and are outside the well-known Cabo de Gata. These beaches often surpass the more popular ones in terms of natural beauty and tranquility. If you want to go a bit further and swim in beaches surrounded by nature away from the crowds, join us in this article.

Natural beaches of Cuevas de Almanzora (Almería)

Cuevas del Almanzora boasts 17 kilometers of coastline spread across the villages of Palomares and Villaricos. The shoreline is very diverse, and we are sure it will surprise you. You can find everything from expansive sandy beaches, ideal for families with children, to hidden, dreamy coves. There are pristine coves where, if you arrive early in the morning, you might find the beach completely deserted. The underwater landscapes are amazing, and if you enjoy hiking, you can explore the remnants of the mining history along the Foundries Route that stretches along the entire coast.

We haven’t seen them all (although we want to someday), but here are the natural beaches in Cuevas de Almanzora, Almería, that we liked the most. You won’t regret visiting them.

Cala Cristal

Cala Cristal is a small beach with rocks jutting out into the sea and small sandy patches. It’s very peaceful and perfect for enjoying the underwater scenery. Located about 100 meters from the road, it can be accessed via stairs and wooden walkways. On this natural beach, we went diving and saw sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and even a sea sponge. Cala Cristal completely captivated us.

El Calón

El Calón is a spacious beach located in a natural setting near an urbanized area. It’s a very peaceful natural beach, popular with local families and divers due to its spectacular underwater scenery, which includes several diving routes. Peñón Cortado Beach

This hidden beach deserves a special mention because it has it all. It’s one of those beaches that you can find deserted early in the morning, and in that case, you won’t know where to point your camera because it’s a marvel of a beach. To reach it, you’ll have to walk along a dirt path for about 400 meters from the road and then take a narrow trail that leads to the beach through rocks and tunnels—an amazing experience! The beach itself is small, surrounded by large rocks and cliffs on both sides, giving it a distinctive and unmistakable shape. Its seabed is full of oceanic posidonia, indicating the quality of its waters. It tends to be quite busy on weekends and during midday hours—everyone deserves to see this marvel of the sea!

Cala Malpaso

It’s a beautiful and tranquil beach that tends to be uncrowded. We discovered it while hiking along the Foundries Route, which runs along the coast of Cuevas de Almanzora. When we passed by, there was no one else around, so we couldn’t resist going down to the beach for a refreshing swim. It has areas of fine sand and rocky zones where you can observe plenty of fish and marine life. Don’t forget your snorkeling gear!

If you’re visiting with children, they’ll be delighted to observe crabs, colorful fish, sea cucumbers, and maybe even some starfish. Some people say it’s not suitable for children, but we strongly disagree. While beaches with fine sand and no rocks may pose fewer risks for kids, with proper precautions like wearing appropriate footwear and being cautious while swimming, we’ve found that children greatly enjoy being in touch with nature, discovering shells and small crabs.

Just in front of the beach, there are protruding rocks that you can swim out to, but remember to bring water shoes or suitable footwear for walking on the rocks.
