How to Visit the Giant Geode of Pulpí: Tickets and Recommendations

Tiempo de lectura: 4 minutos

A 10-minute drive from our apartments, you’ll find the Giant Geode of Pulpí, a marvel of nature that we highly recommend visiting, as it’s the only accessible geode in the world.

The Pulpí Geode is a one-of-a-kind wonder. With dimensions of 8 meters in length by 2 meters in height, it’s adorned with enormous gypsum crystals that dazzle those who have the privilege of beholding it. Its state of preservation and transparency make it a true gem of nature. It’s no wonder it’s the largest geode in Europe and the second largest in the world, surpassed only by its counterpart in Mexico, the Naica Geode in the state of Chihuahua.

But what makes the Pulpí Geode even more special is that it’s the only one in the world that can be visited without specialized equipment. This means that anyone with curiosity and a desire to explore can have the unique opportunity to admire this underground marvel.

Where is the Giant Geode of Pulpí

The Geode of Pulpí is located just 10 minutes from our accommodation, in the town of Pulpí, within the Mina Rica, also known as the geode of Pilar de Jaravía, located at the foot of the Sierra del Aguilón. In this mine, which was formerly exploited for its iron, lead, and silver deposits, the geode is located about 60 meters deep. However, Mina Rica not only houses the impressive main geode; there are also other geological formations of interest, such as the smaller geodes of La Partida and Colas de Golondrina.

It was in 1999 when the Mineralogist Group of Madrid discovered the Geode of Pulpí, and since then, it has been a must-visit destination for those seeking to marvel at underground beauty.

How to book tickets to visit the Giant Geode of Pulpí

If you want to visit the Geode of Pulpí, it is essential to book tickets well in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly. You will need to do this online by selecting the day and time of your visit and paying the price in advance.

Visits are scheduled in groups of 12 people descending into the cave every half an hour. Due to this limitation, available tickets are limited, so it is recommended to purchase them in advance. During the tour, a guide will accompany the group, providing detailed explanations in Spanish about the mine and the Geode. If an English-speaking guide is needed, it can be requested, although availability is not guaranteed in advance. The total duration of the cave visit is approximately two hours.

Each visitor will be provided with a safety helmet, which must be worn throughout the visit. Additionally, closed-toe and suitable footwear for walking during the tour is required.

It is important to note that children must be at least 8 years old to participate in the visit, and they may be asked to provide their ID card or passport.

The entrance fee is €22.00 for adults and €10.00 for children aged 8 to 16. Additionally, there are special rates for seniors, large families, disabled individuals, and groups.

What is the visit to the Giant Geode of Pulpí like?

Once inside, visitors are greeted by expert guides who will lead them through the mine, providing detailed information about the geode and its surroundings. The visit lasts approximately two hours and includes the opportunity to admire the impressive gypsum crystals up close.

During the visit, a one-and-a-half-hour route is walked through the main galleries of the Rica Mine. The galleries are spacious and do not require crawling or climbing at any time. Several flights of stairs are descended, including a spiral staircase. At the end of the tour, visitors reach a platform where, one by one, they can observe the Geode through an opening, without being able to fully enter it. In total, 164 steps are descended and ascended along the route.

For those with mobility difficulties or medical conditions such as heart or respiratory problems, there is an elevator that avoids the need to climb and descend the spiral stairs.

There are some important rules to follow during the visit. For example, no photographs are allowed, and backpacks or bags are not permitted. Don’t worry about not being able to have a photographic memory of your visit, as the guides take photos of everyone, either individually or in groups, and then email them to you. You are advised to leave your mobile phone in the car because you will not have coverage inside the cave. Additionally, it is necessary to wear closed-toe shoes and follow the guide’s instructions at all times to ensure the safety and preservation of the site.
